Dental Insurance Broker in Fort Worth, TX
Dental plans look alike until you need a crown. Wilkerson Insurance Agency is an independent broker that compares dental insurance for Fort Worth individuals, families, seniors, and employers, and our team includes two former dental hygienists who read the fine print on waiting periods, annual maximums, and networks.
Your Dental Insurance Broker in Fort Worth
A dental insurance broker compares plans from several carriers and explains what each one pays. Because we are independent, you see more than one company's plans side by side. Two of our agents are former dental hygienists, so we can read a plan's implant, orthodontic, and waiting period language the way a clinician would.
Dental needs change with age. Tarrant County has about 551,000 residents under 18 and about 288,000 who are 65 or older, based on 2024 estimates, and their coverage options are very different. For a statewide overview, see our dental insurance plans page.
For every Fort Worth client, we:
- Compare dental plans from the carriers available in your ZIP code.
- Check whether your dentist is in each plan's network.
- Flag waiting periods, annual maximums, and exclusions before you enroll.
- Match the plan type to the care you expect to need.
- Handle enrollment, then stay available for questions all year.
Dental Coverage Tiers: The 100-80-50 Pattern
Most dental plans sort care into three tiers, and each tier pays a different share. The pattern below is common, but every plan sets its own percentages.
| Tier | Examples | Typical in-network coverage |
|---|---|---|
| Preventive | Exams, cleanings, routine X-rays | Often 100% |
| Basic | Fillings, simple extractions | Often about 80% |
| Major | Crowns, bridges, root canals, dentures | Often about 50% |
Preventive care usually has no waiting period, which is where dental insurance pays for itself fastest. Basic and major care often carry waiting periods of several months.
Many plans also apply a deductible, which is usually waived for preventive care. The annual maximum is the most a plan pays in a calendar year, and on most individual plans it generally ranges from $1,000 to $2,000. A root canal and a crown in the same year can use up a lower maximum fast, so we compare that math against the care you expect before you enroll.
Dental Plan Types Available in Fort Worth
| Plan type | How it works | Often fits |
|---|---|---|
| PPO | You can see any dentist, and in-network dentists charge negotiated rates | People who want to keep a current dentist or see specialists directly |
| DHMO | You pick a primary dentist in a network, with fixed copays and no out-of-network coverage | Budget-focused shoppers who accept a smaller network |
| Indemnity | You see any licensed dentist, and the plan reimburses a set share of usual charges | People who want the widest choice |
| Discount plan | Not insurance. A membership that gives reduced fees at participating dentists | A bridge while an insurance waiting period clears |
Plan type decides which dentists you can see and how much flexibility you keep if your needs change. A DHMO often has the lowest premium, but it covers only in-network dentists, so confirm that yours participates.
A discount plan pays none of your dental bills. It usually has no deductible, no waiting period, and no annual maximum, but you pay the discounted fee in full at each visit.
Dental Coverage Through the Marketplace
You can pick a Marketplace health plan with or without dental benefits, and you can add a separate dental plan with its own premium. You cannot buy a Marketplace dental plan unless you buy a health plan at the same time. Separate dental plans can have waiting periods before they cover services for adults.
Dental coverage is an essential health benefit for children 18 and under, so it must be available as part of a health plan or as a separate plan, but you do not have to buy it. It is not an essential health benefit for adults.
If you buy a Marketplace health plan for your family, ask which plans include child dental and what a separate dental plan would add. Open Enrollment for 2027 coverage runs November 1 to January 15, and private dental plans bought outside the Marketplace are often available year-round.
Our Fort Worth health insurance broker page explains how to pair dental coverage with a health plan.
Dental Insurance Coverage and Exclusions
Dental insurance generally covers:
- Exams, cleanings, and X-rays.
- Fillings and simple extractions.
- Crowns, bridges, root canals, and dentures, at a lower percentage.
- Orthodontics, on some plans or with a rider.
Cosmetic work such as teeth whitening is often excluded, and implants are covered only on some plans, often with a waiting period. Coverage limits depend on the plan, so we confirm the details before you enroll.

The Missing Tooth Clause
Some plans will not cover an implant, bridge, or denture to replace a tooth that was already missing when your coverage started. We check for this clause in every plan we recommend.
The Alternate Benefit Rule
A plan that covers implants may pay only what a cheaper option, such as a bridge or partial denture, would have cost. You pay the difference. We read this language before we recommend a plan to anyone with implant needs.
The Waiting Period Trap
If you enroll and need a crown right away, the plan may not pay until the waiting period ends. You still pay premiums during that time. Some carriers waive waiting periods with proof of prior dental coverage, and terms vary, so we ask before you enroll.
For a deeper walkthrough, see our guide to choosing a dental plan and our explainer on how dental insurance works.
Questions to Ask Before You Enroll
- Confirm the annual maximum and that it resets each calendar year.
- Ask which procedures have waiting periods, and for how long.
- Check that your dentist is in the network for this exact plan.
- Look for a missing tooth clause or an alternate benefit rule.
- Review how the plan treats implants and orthodontics.
- Compare a bundled dental and vision plan against two separate plans.
Dental Insurance for Fort Worth Seniors
In most cases, Medicare does not cover routine dental care such as cleanings, fillings, extractions, dentures, or implants. Medicare may cover some dental services that are tied to a covered medical treatment, such as an exam before a heart valve replacement or a tooth extraction before cancer treatment. Most Medicare Advantage plans include some dental benefits, and the limits vary.
Many Fort Worth seniors pair Original Medicare and a Medicare Supplement plan with a separate dental policy. Our Medicare dental coverage guide explains the gap in more detail. Agent Beatrice Rivas offers bilingual support for Medicare clients in English and Spanish.
Dental Insurance for Fort Worth Employers and the Self-Employed
Group dental can round out a medical package, and the employer chooses how much to contribute. We compare group dental alongside your medical plan, and our group health insurance plans page explains the Texas rules for small employers.
If you work for yourself, you buy dental coverage on your own. Census data counts 240,907 nonemployer businesses in Tarrant County in 2024, which means many owners work without paid staff and shop for individual plans. An individual plan, or a group plan once you hire, can fit.
Dental and Vision Bundling
Several carriers sell dental and vision together, and a bundle can lower the combined premium compared with two separate plans, depending on the carrier. We compare bundled and standalone options side by side. Our vision insurance plans page explains the vision side.
Dental Insurance Costs in Fort Worth
Premiums vary by plan type, coverage tier, carrier, and ZIP code. The ranges below are representative market estimates, not a quote. Rates can also vary by ZIP code within DFW, so a quote for your address is more useful than a general range.
| Coverage type | Estimated monthly cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Individual PPO | $20 to $60 | Higher tiers and orthodontic riders sit toward the top |
| Individual DHMO | $8 to $20 | Lowest cost, fixed copays, smaller network |
| Family PPO | $60 to $150 | Covers adults and children on one policy |
Premium is only part of the cost. Add the deductible, the coinsurance on basic and major care, and any care above the annual maximum when you compare plans.
Published starting prices from a major Texas carrier fall within the first two ranges. Your actual premium depends on your age, ZIP code, household size, and the plan you choose. A licensed agent can prepare an estimated quote from your details.
