HSA Insurance Broker in Fort Worth, TX
Healthcare costs keep rising, but an HSA-qualified health plan lets you pay for care with pre-tax dollars. Wilkerson Insurance Agency is an independent broker that compares HSA-eligible high-deductible health plans (HDHPs) for Fort Worth individuals, self-employed professionals, and employers across Tarrant County.
Your HSA Insurance Broker in Fort Worth
A health savings account, or HSA, is a tax-advantaged account for health care costs, and you can open one only with a qualifying high-deductible health plan. Our job is the plan side. We compare HSA-eligible plans, check each one against the IRS limits, and explain how the deductible, premium, and tax credit fit together.
The account itself is set up through a financial institution, such as a bank or credit union. We do not hold HSA funds, and we do not give tax or investment advice. A tax professional can speak to your personal situation.
For a statewide overview, see our HSA plans page. For every Fort Worth client, we:
- Compare HSA-eligible plans from the carriers available in your ZIP code.
- Check each plan against the IRS minimum deductible and maximum out-of-pocket limit.
- Compare your total yearly cost under an HSA plan and a standard plan.
- Estimate your premium tax credit when you buy on the Marketplace.
- Handle enrollment, then stay available for questions all year.
HSA Basics for Fort Worth Households
An HSA lets you set aside money for medical costs, and the money stays yours. Funds do not expire, so you can build a balance year after year.
You can keep the account if you change jobs, change plans, or retire. You can pay qualified costs from it as they come up, or let the balance grow for later.
HSAs carry three federal tax benefits when you use them for qualified medical expenses:
- Contributions may be tax-deductible, or pre-tax through payroll.
- Growth inside the account is tax-free.
- Withdrawals for qualified medical expenses are tax-free.
Texas has no state personal income tax, so the tax benefit here comes from the federal side. A tax professional can confirm how an HSA affects your return.
To contribute, you need a qualifying high-deductible health plan (HDHP) and no other non-HDHP coverage. You also cannot be enrolled in Medicare or be claimed as a dependent on someone else's tax return.
HSA and HDHP Limits for 2026 and 2027
The IRS sets these amounts each year. Contribution limits include any employer contributions to the same account.
| Limit | 2026 | 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| Self-only HSA contribution | $4,400 | $4,500 |
| Family HSA contribution | $8,750 | $9,000 |
| Catch-up contribution, age 55 and older | $1,000 | $1,000 |
| HDHP minimum deductible, self-only | $1,700 | $1,750 |
| HDHP minimum deductible, family | $3,400 | $3,500 |
| HDHP maximum out-of-pocket, self-only | $8,500 | $8,700 |
| HDHP maximum out-of-pocket, family | $17,000 | $17,400 |
| Direct primary care fees, per month | $150 self-only, $300 family | $150 self-only, $300 family |
Source: IRS Revenue Procedures 2025-19 and 2026-24, and section 223 of the Internal Revenue Code for the catch-up and direct primary care amounts. You can make 2026 contributions until the federal tax filing deadline in 2027, and you can make 2027 contributions during 2027.
HSA-Eligible Plans Available in Fort Worth
Starting in 2026, all Catastrophic and Bronze plans bought on HealthCare.gov are HSA-eligible, according to the Texas Department of Insurance. In Tarrant County, 30 of the 126 Marketplace plans sold for 2026 are Bronze. The lowest-cost Bronze plan costs a 40-year-old non-smoker about $450 a month before tax credits, based on CMS data analyzed by Mira.
Silver and Gold plans qualify only when they meet the IRS minimum deductible and maximum out-of-pocket limit. They also cannot cover care before the deductible, except for preventive care and telehealth. A plan sold as high deductible can still fall short, and a $1,500 deductible does not qualify in 2026.
| Plan type | HSA status | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Marketplace Bronze | Eligible since 2026 | Lower premium, higher deductible |
| Marketplace Catastrophic | Eligible since 2026 | For people under 30 or with a hardship exemption |
| Marketplace Silver and Gold | Only if they meet IRS limits | We check each plan |
| Employer group HDHP | If it meets IRS rules | Your employer may contribute |
| Private HDHP | If it meets IRS rules | Can fit people without tax credits |
Networks differ by plan, so we check your doctors and hospitals before you enroll. Fort Worth has major health systems, including JPS Health Network, Cook Children's, and Texas Health Harris Methodist Fort Worth.
Household Fit: HSA Plan or Standard Plan
An HSA Plan May Fit If
- You rarely use care and could cover the deductible if something happens.
- You want to save for future medical costs in a tax-advantaged account.
- You are self-employed and buy your own coverage.
- Your employer offers an HDHP and may contribute to your HSA.
A Standard Plan May Fit Better If
- You expect frequent care or high prescription costs.
- You could not pay the deductible from savings.
- You prefer fixed copays and a lower deductible.
- You are enrolled in Medicare, because new contributions stop once Medicare starts.
We compare your total yearly cost under both options, including the premium, deductible, and out-of-pocket maximum, so you see the real trade-off. Our HSA vs traditional plan comparison shows how that math works.
HSA vs FSA for Fort Worth Households
| Feature | HSA | FSA |
|---|---|---|
| Plan requirement | Needs a qualifying HDHP | Usually offered through an employer |
| Unused funds | Roll over, with no expiration | Often expire at year-end, with limited exceptions |
| Ownership | The account is yours | Tied to your employer's plan |
| Changing jobs | You keep the account | Usually ends when you leave the employer |
Other coverage, including some FSAs, can affect your HSA eligibility, so tell us what you have. Our HSA vs FSA guide covers the differences in more detail.
Qualified Expenses You Can Pay With an HSA
Qualified expenses include:
- Your deductible, copays, and coinsurance.
- Doctor visits and hospital care.
- Dental and vision care.
- Prescriptions and over-the-counter items such as bandages and thermometers.
- Medical equipment, such as hearing aids and blood sugar monitors.
- Direct primary care memberships, up to $150 a month for one person or $300 a month for a family.
Cosmetic procedures, gym memberships, personal care items, and most insurance premiums are not qualified expenses. Exceptions include COBRA, long-term care, and retiree health coverage. If you spend HSA funds on something that does not qualify, the money is taxed as income and may carry a penalty before age 65.
HSA and Medicare
You cannot make new HSA contributions once you enroll in Medicare, but you can keep spending your existing funds on qualified expenses. Plan to stop contributing about six months before you start Medicare benefits, and confirm your dates with a tax professional.
If you are nearing 65, read our 55 to 64 coverage guide. Our Medicare Supplement plans page explains what comes next.
HSA Plans for Fort Worth Employers
Fort Worth employers span aviation, healthcare, and logistics, and each needs a plan design that fits its team. An employer can offer an HDHP paired with HSAs, and the employer may contribute to employee accounts. We compare group health insurance plans from top carriers, even for a team of two.
For a small business, an HDHP with HSAs is one way to offer a benefits package that employees can carry with them, because the account belongs to the employee. We walk owners through plan design, employer contributions, and renewal timing, and we confirm each plan meets IRS rules before you offer it. Clear employee communication helps, so we explain how the HSA works in plain English.
Employer and employee contributions combine toward the same IRS limit. If an employer contributes $1,500 to a self-only HSA in 2026, the employee can add up to $2,900 before reaching the $4,400 limit. Our guide on how group health insurance works explains the basics.
HSA Plans for Self-Employed Fort Worth Workers
If you work for yourself, you buy coverage on your own. A Bronze plan on the Marketplace is HSA-eligible, and tax credits may lower the premium, based on income.
Real estate agents and other 1099 workers can also compare private HDHPs. If you are between jobs, a Bronze plan can bridge the gap until employer coverage starts, and the HSA stays with you.
Your income can change from month to month, so a manageable deductible matters. You can contribute in a lump sum or over time, up to the IRS limit. We compare Bronze, Catastrophic, and private HDHP options by premium, deductible, network, and total yearly cost, so you can match the plan to your cash flow.
Contributions may be tax-deductible, so ask a tax professional about your situation. Our self-employed deduction guide covers the questions to raise. Real estate agents can also review the Competitive Edge Realty Health Plan.
Open Enrollment and 2027 HSA Plans
Open Enrollment for 2027 coverage runs November 1 to January 15 on HealthCare.gov. Choose a plan by December 15 for coverage that starts January 1. You can contribute to an HSA only while you are covered by a qualifying HDHP.
The 2027 limits in the table above apply to contributions made during 2027. If you want to switch to an HSA-eligible plan, Open Enrollment is the main window, and a qualifying life event can open a 60-day window outside it.
Cigna has announced it will stop selling individual and family plans in Texas after 2026, and Baylor Scott & White Health Plan has said it will leave the Texas Marketplace. If your HSA-eligible plan comes from either carrier, you need a new plan for 2027 to keep contributing. Our guide on coverage after Open Enrollment walks through your options.
Common HSA Mistakes Fort Worth Households Make
Assuming Any High-Deductible Plan Qualifies
Only plans that meet the IRS rules work with an HSA. Ask for confirmation before you enroll.
Choosing by Premium Alone
A lower premium comes with a higher deductible. Confirm that you could cover that deductible if you need care.
Contributing Over the Limit
Employer contributions count toward your limit. Excess contributions can trigger tax problems, so track the total.
Contributing After Medicare Starts
New contributions stop once you enroll in Medicare. Plan the timing before you turn 65.
Spending on Non-Qualified Items
Withdrawals for non-qualified expenses are taxed as income and may carry a penalty. Check an expense before you pay with HSA funds.
