Individual & Family Health Insurance Broker in Fort Worth, TX
Finding the right health insurance for your household shouldn't be overwhelming. Wilkerson Insurance Agency is an independent health insurance agency that compares Marketplace (ACA) and private plans across Fort Worth and Tarrant County, calculating premium tax credits and verifying doctor networks before you enroll.
Your Health Insurance Broker in Fort Worth
An independent health insurance broker compares plans from several carriers and helps you enroll in the one that fits your household. You can buy on HealthCare.gov yourself, and some Fort Worth shoppers do. A broker adds a person who explains the trade-offs and stays available after you enroll.
The need is real in Tarrant County. Census estimates put the share of residents under 65 without health insurance at about 17.6%, and Texas has not expanded Medicaid. Adults without employer coverage often rely on the Marketplace or private plans.
For a statewide overview, see our individual and family plans page. For every Fort Worth household, we:
- Compare Marketplace and private plans available for your ZIP code.
- Estimate your premium tax credit before you pick a plan.
- Check your doctors, hospitals, and prescriptions against each plan.
- Explain deductibles, copays, and out-of-pocket maximums in plain English.
- Handle enrollment, then stay available for questions all year.
Broker Help vs Going It Alone in Fort Worth
HealthCare.gov is a useful tool, and a broker adds judgment and follow-through. Here is where the difference shows up.
| Task | On your own | With Wilkerson |
|---|---|---|
| Comparing carriers | You search one site and sort through every plan | We compare plans from several carriers side by side |
| Estimating tax credits | You enter income and household data alone | We estimate your credit and show how it changes each plan |
| Checking networks | You look up each doctor on each plan | We check your doctors, hospitals, and prescriptions |
| Choosing a window | You track the deadlines yourself | We map your Open Enrollment or Special Enrollment dates |
| After you enroll | You call the carrier with questions | You can call us, and we review your plan each year |
Individual and Family Health Insurance Plans We Offer in Fort Worth
Fort Worth households usually choose from these plan types.
ACA Marketplace Plans
Marketplace plans cover the 10 essential health benefits, and no plan can turn you away for a pre-existing condition. You enroll through HealthCare.gov or a licensed agent, and tax credits may lower your premium, based on income.
Private and Off-Exchange Plans
Some private plans are sold outside the Marketplace. They can fit people who do not qualify for tax credits or want a different network. We explain what each plan covers and leaves out before you buy.
Family Plans for Parents and Children
A family plan can cover a spouse and children under one policy, and young adults can stay on a parent's plan until age 26. Some children may qualify for Medicaid or CHIP based on income, and we point you to the right program.
HSA-Eligible Plans
All Bronze and Catastrophic Marketplace plans work with a Health Savings Account, and some other plans do too. An HSA lets you set aside pre-tax money for medical costs. Read more about HSA plans.
Catastrophic Plans
Catastrophic plans are open to people under 30 and to people with a hardship or affordability exemption, where offered. They carry high deductibles. Our guide to catastrophic health insurance in Texas explains who qualifies.
Plans for the Self-Employed
If you work for yourself, you buy coverage on your own. We compare premium, deductible, network, and HSA fit, and we point you to a tax professional about any deduction.
Health Insurance Costs and Subsidies in Fort Worth
Subsidy information last reviewed: October 2026. Confirm your numbers when you enroll.
For 2026, CMS data shows 126 Marketplace plans from eight insurers sold in Tarrant County, based on an analysis by Mira. Before tax credits, the lowest-cost Bronze plan costs a 40-year-old non-smoker about $450 a month, and the benchmark Silver plan about $692.
| Plan level | 2026 monthly price, age 40, before credits | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Lowest-cost Bronze | About $450 | Lower premium, higher deductible |
| Benchmark Silver | About $692 | Sets the size of your tax credit |
| Lowest-cost Gold | About $625 | Higher premium than Bronze, lower cost when you get care |
In Tarrant County, the lowest-cost Gold plan costs less each month than the benchmark Silver plan, so comparing deductibles matters as much as comparing premiums.
Tax credits changed this year. The larger credits that ran through 2025 ended on January 1, 2026, and credits now generally apply to households with incomes between 100% and 400% of the federal poverty level. CMS data shows 236,647 Tarrant County residents picked a 2026 plan and paid about $94 a month on average after credits, so your result depends on your income.
Insurers have proposed higher rates for 2027 too, so final prices may differ from these 2026 figures. Plans and prices for 2027 appear on HealthCare.gov shortly before Open Enrollment starts on November 1.
Your premium is the monthly price. Your deductible is what you pay before coverage starts for most services, and your out-of-pocket maximum is the yearly ceiling on covered care.
ACA Metal Levels for Fort Worth Households
| Level | Plan pays / you pay | Good fit |
|---|---|---|
| Bronze | 60% / 40%, with a high deductible | Households that rarely use care and want a lower premium, including those pairing with an HSA |
| Silver | 70% / 30%, with a moderate deductible | Many households, and the only level with cost-sharing reductions |
| Silver with extra savings | 73% to 94% / 6% to 27% | Households with incomes between 100% and 250% FPL who qualify for cost-sharing reductions |
| Gold | 80% / 20%, with a lower deductible | People who expect ongoing care, prescriptions, or planned procedures |
Cost-sharing reductions (CSRs) lower deductibles, copays, and out-of-pocket maximums, and only with Silver plans. For a qualifying Fort Worth household, Silver can cost less overall than a lower-premium Bronze plan.
HMO, PPO, EPO, and POS Plans in Fort Worth
Plan type decides how much freedom you have to choose providers, and it affects your costs. Here is how the four types differ:
- HMO: You stay in the plan's network, except in an emergency, and monthly premiums are often lower.
- PPO: You pay less in the network, and you can see out-of-network providers without a referral for an added cost.
- EPO: Services are covered only in the plan's network, except in an emergency.
- POS: You pay less in the network, and you need a referral from your primary care doctor to see a specialist.
Fort Worth has major health systems, including JPS Health Network, Cook Children's, and Texas Health Harris Methodist Fort Worth. Networks differ from plan to plan, so we check whether the hospitals and specialists you use are in a plan's network before you enroll. Families with children should confirm that Cook Children's is in the network.
Our HMO vs PPO guide compares the four types in more detail.

Real Estate Agents
Most agents work as independent contractors without employer coverage. The Competitive Edge Realty Health Plan was designed for real estate professionals.
People Between Jobs
Losing job-based coverage can open a Special Enrollment Period. COBRA is one option to compare, and we help you weigh it against Marketplace and private plans.
Early Retirees Before Medicare
If you retire before 65, you need coverage until Medicare starts. Read our 55 to 64 coverage guide, and see our Medicare Supplement plans for what comes next.
Young Adults Aging Off a Parent's Plan
Coverage on a parent's plan ends at age 26, and that change can open a Special Enrollment Period.

Families New to Fort Worth

Open Enrollment and Special Enrollment for Fort Worth Residents
Open Enrollment for 2027 Coverage
- Open Enrollment runs November 1 to January 15 on HealthCare.gov.
- Choose a plan by December 15 for coverage that starts January 1.
- Choose a plan by January 15 for coverage that starts February 1.
Special Enrollment Periods
Outside Open Enrollment, a qualifying life event may give you a 60-day window to enroll or change plans. Common events include:
- Losing qualifying health coverage, or expecting to lose it within 60 days.
- Getting married.
- Having a baby, adopting a child, or placing a child for foster care.
- Moving to a new ZIP code or county.
If you lose Medicaid or CHIP coverage, the window can stretch to 90 days. Our guide on coverage after Open Enrollment walks through your options.
If Your Plan Is Leaving the Marketplace
Cigna has announced it will stop selling individual and family plans in Texas after 2026, and Cigna plans are sold in Tarrant County this year. Baylor Scott & White Health Plan has also said it will leave the Texas Marketplace after 2026. If you have a plan from either carrier, you need new coverage for 2027, so choose a plan during Open Enrollment.
Not sure which window applies to you?
We check your dates and walk you through the next step.
ACA Marketplace Plans vs Private Plans in Fort Worth
| Feature | ACA Marketplace plan | Non-ACA private plan, such as short-term |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-existing conditions | Cannot be denied or charged more | May be excluded or underwritten |
| Essential health benefits | All 10 covered | May not cover all of them |
| Tax credits | Available if you qualify | Not available |
| Enrollment | Open Enrollment or a Special Enrollment Period | Often available year-round |
Some limited-benefit plans use names that sound like major medical coverage. We explain what any plan leaves out before you buy, and our guide to short-term plan pros and cons shows the trade-offs.
Common Mistakes Fort Worth Households Make
Choosing by Premium Alone
A low premium can come with a very high deductible. Compare the deductible and out-of-pocket maximum too.
Skipping the Network Check
If your doctor or hospital is out of network, the same care can cost far more. Check each provider before you enroll.
Ignoring the Drug List
The same medicine can cost very different amounts from one plan to the next. Check your prescriptions against each plan's drug list.
Using Last Year's Subsidy Estimate
Credits changed in 2026. Run your numbers again with current rules.
Missing a Life-Event Window
Most Special Enrollment Periods last 60 days. Waiting past that can leave you uninsured until the next Open Enrollment.
